I'm certainly no expert in the kitchen, but this has to be the most irritating, frustrating piece of crap I've ever encountered.

I'm a body builder, and need to meticulously weigh everything I eat. Not only does this thing make me look up or memorize the code for each food, enter it into the machine, and then press another button 4 times to finally get to protein, but then I get to sit there and watch the weight fluctuate up and down several grams while nothing is being added or taken away!

Most of the time I can take the batteries out, wait a few minutes, then try it again and get what I hope is an accurate measurement. But now when I enter any code, the display fades out completely, making this scale totally worthless.

Needless to say, my next scale will NOT be from Eat Smart!

I received this as a gift when I noted I was looking for another food scale after mine went on the blitz.

As a someone who coaches others how to lose weight, the first step we all know is accountability and weighing food intake so you know what you are consuming. The fact that this scale makes it easy to look up foods seemed like a dream scale.

As someone with a trained culinary background I also know an accurate scale is far better than measuring cups in baking.

So why the low rating?

To my confusion, after realizing I continued to get varied weights on the same item and innacurate weights from what the packaging of products stated, I began to compare weights with my neighbors scale (bear in mind packaging weights can vary from what is inside but this never could get even the weight of a known weight correct.)
So...I then looked at the manufacturer's description of the scale on the website and on Amazon.

Know why it's not accurate? It's only programmed with an accuracy level to 0.1 ounces. Is this the norm for food scales? No, but you do find it on some others. Many cheap once have an accuracy of 0.05 ounces. Twice as good as this expensive one.
In case of doubt, you'll find this on this product page which you may not know is not a great accuracy until you compare it to other scales...and most who buy this may not be chefs, but just needed calorie accuracy so they wouldn't know what to look for:

Inaccurate measurements equaling 500 calories per day equals 3,500 calories per week which is a pound gained per week. (3,500 calories is equal to one pound) While it would probably not add up to that much in variance, if I want a calorie scale I don't want the cheap ones to beat this one out in accuracy because accuracy is the most important aspect of a scale in order to accurately count calories.

I can buy a very cheap digital scale with an accuracy of 0.05 oz rather than 0.1 ounce resolution as this has.

That's just too high of a variance in weight for someone who is using it to get accurate calorie counts and if you aren't buying it for that, why would you pay so much more for the calorie calculator on it?

But I use it for baking a lot too. That kind of variance won't help me there either even though it's not huge, if the scale itself weighs in slightly inaccurate on top of that then we can get some big variances and that much variance in salt or yeast etc. is not what a baker wants either.

There are amazing calorie counters on smart phone apps as well as free ones on the internet. So for them to put the money into the calculator and a scale with high variance for this price rather than giving a more accurate scale seems very odd to me, except I would imagine most people wouldn't know to look.

So I returned this...and spent the next several weeks comparing scales. I got one with 0.05 accuracy and it can fit in a drawer, I have a calorie counting book and a phone app. While this was a free gift to me, paying a few and staying thinner is a better bet to me long term.

Do I love the calculator? I do. I think it's a brilliant idea but it attaching it to a poor scale lends it useless unfortunately. But I gave it an extra star for the calculator.

Another issue? They included packaged foods in the calorie listing. From coaching others in weight loss one of the first things they learn is how often the calories on food packaging changes. One frozen dinner changed the recipe 3 times in one year changing the calorie count as well. I've seen many low calorie items go up in calories in a few years. Crackers, chips...just loads of things. Major name brands.
So an updated phone app (and you could get a cheap scale that's more accurate and buy a used iphone for the cost of this and get free excersize videos on it too) that gets updated would do you better.

It also only has a 2 year warranty where I found many of the very cheap, more accurate scale had a 5 year warranty.

And it's bulky...I can't easily keep it in a shallow drawer to weigh foods by just opening my drawer and putting something atop it as I could in the past.

The past few weeks, I've been looking for a high quality, reliable, easy, and usable nutrition scale as a Christmas present for my mum, so, I too have scoured Amazon reviews but was stuck with indecision.

I was interested in the Salter models 1406 and 1450 and this EatSmart model.

I discounted the Salter 1450:
- screen looked crowded and difficult to read- fine for me, but my mum? and
- Although I liked the concept of an internal nutrition database that doesn't require you plug in codes, I read in reviews that it is actually tedious to enter foods into the button system- which is set up like a telephone dialing system so you'd have to press 3 three times in order to get the letter "F".

So, though a cool concept the dim and crowded screen and my mother's low technical savvy ways, made me decide to say good bye to this seemingly cool (and expensive) scale.

I also discounted the code-dependent Salter 1406:
- although the code book sounded fine, the information screen also looked dim, small, and crowded. Although I'm looking for a scale that can produce a lot of information, I want it to be clearly presented so it is easy and enjoyable to process.

Then I turned to the Eat Smart Digital Nutrition Scale:

- It works by a code book, so easier for my mum.
- I was also impressed by the clear presentation of the nutritional information into 3 easily readable values on a screen.
- I also thought my mum would benefit from the back-lit option.

However, I decided to ring EatSmart and see if they could fill in the remaining holes and see if I could feel more confident in making this purchase.

I am very impressed with the customer service: within 30 seconds I was talking to a representative who was a great source for information and seemed an expert on this specific model.

He described all 4 different screens:

1st screen shows: Calories/Carbs/Fiber
2nd screen shows: Sodium/Potassium/Magnesium
3rd screen shows: Total Fat/Sat Fat/Cholesterol
4th screen shows: Calcium/Protein/Vitamin K

I actually prefer going through 4 different screens to a crowded screen, and I think my mum will too.

I also asked about a few items to see if they were in the code book. After reading a review that complained that sugar and baking soda are not in the code book, I asked about those. (Hoping that perhaps they had revised the code book).

The representative said that baking soda is not in the code book but said it is very easy to figure out the nutritional information for anything at all- and we went through it step-by-step.

He suggested:

Step 1: Look the food up on the USDA nutrition tool on the website I beleive it is this webpage: [...]
Ex. I looked up Raw Sugar

Step 2: Select measure of food for one serving; and how many of desired nutritional values are in it- and write it into the provided space at the back of the code booklet so you don't have to look it up again.

Ex. I selected 1 individual packet, which is 5 g. and found that there are 4.9 carbs.

Step 3: Enter it into the nutrition calculator in the scale and measure the amount of food. It would then calculate the nutrition value for the amount of food I would be using.

Ex. I put sugar from 1.75 packets on the scale and am told that there are 8.575 Carbs.

It sounds like a fairly easy process, and even though it may throw my mum for a loop at first, I'm sure with my help we'll get her used to that.

So, I went ahead and think this will be a present she'll like and use. But secretly, I'm also going to be excited to try it out in person on Christmas day and will update. I also know, it's a matter of time before I justify buying this for myself!
